Individual Savings Accounts - ISA's
With an ISA you can save up to £7,000 each year and not pay tax on the income you receive from it.
The ISA page provides information about the types of ISA you can have and how much you can save each tax year.
Types of ISA - Mini ISA, Maxi ISA
An ISA can be made up of an investment in cash, or stocks and shares or insurance. In each year you can invest in one Maxi ISA, which can include all of the above investment types, or you can have two Mini ISAs – one for cash and one for stocks and shares, which can both include insurance.
You cannot invest in both a Mini ISA and a Maxi ISA in the same tax year.
Unit Trusts
A unit trust is an investment fund where groups of investors benefit from the greater security and better economies of scale than if they had invested individually in company shares.
A similar investment type OEIC (open ended investment company) is another, slightly different form of collective investment.
Investment Bonds
Investment bonds are sold by life insurance companies. They let you invest in a selection of investment funds managed by professional investment managers.
They are usually designed to create long term capital growth, but can also be used to provide an income. Normally the minimum investment is in the region of £5,000 or £10,000. Each fund will hold a portfolio of investments, for example in shares or bonds, and the price of your units will normally rise or fall in line with the value of these investments.
